Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me!

My file shows that I was born at the home of a relative of my birth mother
in 1974. I don't want to give away too many identifying features on a
newsgroup but from what I can make out via the net, the street no longer
exists! (I do not live near the area to go and check myself).

So the questions I have - where can I go and look at the Electoral Register
for that year without travelling accross the country?? Secondly, anyone know
any sites to check out old street names in cities?

Thirdly, if I was going to look up relatives whose birth certificates, (and
maybe marriage certificates) are Scottish, where do I look.

Thanks in advance

Depends on where you live and what part of the country's electoral
registers you want to look at. The Scottish BM&D records are at New
Register House in Edinburgh, there is a computer link to the Scottish
records at the FRC in Islington London. Most County Record Offices, some
larger libraries and the Electoral Registration Officer for the area
concerned usually have past years Electoral Registers for their area.
The British Library Official Publications Section has copies of all
electoral registers back to 1946 and many pre war.

If you want info from last years electoral register try
http://www.192.com the BM&D indexes for England & Wales are at
http://www.1837online.com only the old Scottish records (100+ years
ago) are on line.

I appreciate your desire for anonymity but can you let me know what area your
mother lived in. I had a similar experience and if it was in the same area then
I could maybe help. Alternatively the local library is usually a good source of
old maps.

I rang the local library when I was looking for my mum and the lady there
was really helpful (and discreet as well). She knew the area well and
seemed to know everyone in the area I was looking at
